Since May 19, Houston leads MLB in runs per game at 5.80 while the Mariners have held opponents to 2.53 runs per game over the same span, the lowest mark in MLB.

The Mariners hit the road following a 10-game homestand that saw the team go 8-2 thanks to a four-game split with the Rangers bookended by three-game sweeps over Minnesota and Tampa Bay. Seattle has won 13 of its last 16 games, its first 16-game span with that many wins since the 2011 season.

The Astros split a four-game set with the Red Sox in their last series, winning the first two before dropping two straight. Houston's team ERA has risen from 2.38 after their May 25 game to 2.82 entering today. The team has gone 3-6 over its last nine games, its worst stretch in 2018.

Nelson Cruz has four multi-hit games in his past six, helping the Mariners go 4-2 over that span. Cruz's slash line over his past six games is .435/.462/.783 and he has picked up four extra-base hits, seven RBI while striking out only four times (three times in Sunday's game).

Yuli Gurriel has hit safely in 10 straight games and has picked up at least two hits in five of the 10. Gurriel's career long hit streak is 11 games, accomplished between April 29 and May 9, 2018 and in May of 2017.

Two of MLB's best left-handers will face off in tonight's game. James Paxton has gone at least five innings and allowed no more than three earned runs in seven straight starts. Paxton's ERA since the beginning of 2017 (3.03) ranks fourth among qualifying lefties while Dallas Keuchel is just behind, ranking fifth with a 3.15 ERA.

Mariners, Astros battle for AL West supremacy

HOUSTON (AP)  Even though it's only June, the Seattle Mariners know playing well against the Houston Astros will be vital if they hope to reach the postseason for the first time since 2001.
They did that on Tuesday night, slugging their way to a lopsided win that left them two games ahead of the World Series champs in first place in the American League West.
