The White Sox went 10-9 against the Royals in 2017, the first time they won the season series since 2010. However, the White Sox are 6-14 in Kansas City over the last two seasons, winning only one of the six series.

Chicago finished under .500 for the fifth straight year in 2017, going 67-95 for its worst record since 2013 (63-99). The White Sox did not have a single starter finish with an ERA under 4.00 for the first time since 2006 (minimum 10 starts).

Kansas City finished last in the American League in on-base percentage in 2017 (.311). It was the lowest rate for the Royals since their franchise-worst .309 in 1970. Only two players had at least 50 walks: Eric Hosmer (66) and Lorenzo Cain (54), neither of whom are on the team this season.

Newly acquired Welington Castillo had career-highs in home runs (20) and batting average (.282, minimum 300 at-bats) in 96 games last season. The only season in the past 20 years in which the Sox had a catcher hit at least 20 home runs was A.J. Pierzynski in 2012 (27).

Mike Moustakas set the Royals' single-season record with 38 home runs last season, including six versus the White Sox - his most against any team. The Royals went 24-11 last season when Moustakas homered.

In his last start at Kauffman Stadium on July 21, former Royal James Shields gave up six runs and 10 hits in 4.1 innings, the most hits he allowed and tied for the most runs surrendered on the season. Shields is 7-2 in his career versus the Royals but hasn't won any of his three starts against them in a White Sox uniform, posting a 6.61 ERA.

The Kansas City Royals lost a couple key contributors during the offseason when Eric Hosmer signed with the San Diego Padres and Lorenzo Cain joined the Milwaukee Brewers.
Then the Royals learned this week that they lost five-time All-Star catcher Salvador Perez for at least for the next 4-to-6 weeks. He tore the medial collateral ligament in his left knee on Tuesday night when he lost his balance while carrying luggage from spring training up the stairs of his house.
