The Mariners lost, 2-1, in Boston yesterday, dropping two of three over the weekend at Fenway Park, and falling to 2-9 in their last nine road games overall. Seattle has scored one run just twice in 36 road contests this year (tied for fewest in MLB).

Detroit lost, 2-1, in 13 innings to the Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Sunday, losing its third straight game by a combined score of 28-9. The Tigers are now 2-2 in extra-inning affairs this year.

Tonight marks the first meeting of the season between these clubs. Including a split of four games last year, the M's and Tigers have alternated wins and losses in each of their last 10 games at Comerica Park (each team winning five times).

Nathan Karns went 5.0 innings and allowed just two runs (both earned) last Wednesday vs. Tampa Bay, but was saddled with his second straight, and fifth no-decision in his last eight outings. Karns won his only career start against the Tigers (6.0 IP, 1 ER) on July 27 last season.

Mike Pelfrey allowed four runs (all earned) in 6.0 IP five days ago against the White Sox, taking the loss, and dropping to 2-16 with a 5.27 ERA in his last 32 starts overall (dating to June 13 last season while still with the Twins). Pelfrey is 0-1 with a 2.03 ERA in two career starts against the Mariners.

Steven Moya clubbed his first MLB home run yesterday, on his way to a 3-for-5 performance. Detroit had a total of 25 hits in its last three games, with 10 of those coming off the bats of Moya (5) and Miguel Cabrera (5).

DETROIT -- Reformatted rotations come into play Thursday afternoon when the Detroit Tigers host the Seattle Mariners in the finale of a four-game series.
Seattle has right-hander Adrian Sampson (0-1, 7.71 ERA) making his second start, as the Mariners are missing three starters from their usual rotation. Sampson will oppose Tigers lefty Daniel Norris, who will make his first major league start of the year.

DETROIT (AP)  Steven Moya is finally showing off a bit of his power at the major league level.
Moya homered twice, and the Detroit Tigers withstood a shaky fifth inning from right-hander Michael Fulmer to beat the Seattle Mariners 5-1 on Wednesday night. After slugging his way through the minors, the 6-foot-6 Moya was without a home run in his first 31 games for the Tigers - but he hit one Sunday and then added a couple more Wednesday.
