The Boston Red Sox went 71-91 last season, finishing in last place in the AL East for the second time in three seasons. Boston became the first team in MLB history to finish in last place, then win the division the next season, and then finish in last place the season after that. The team's 91 losses in 2014 and 93 losses in 2012 mark the club's only two 90-loss seasons since 1966 (72-90).

The Philadelphia Phillies have gone 73-89 in each of the last two seasons, the first time they have won fewer than 75 games in back-to-back seasons since 1996 and 1997. Philadelphia's last-place finish in the NL East last season was its first since 2000.

Boston is playing on the road on Opening Day for the fifth straight season and the 17th time in the last 20 seasons, most in MLB. The Red Sox are 5-4 in their last nine season openers after losing their previous five.

The Phillies have won four of their last five games on Opening Day after dropping their previous four. Over the last 40 years, Philadelphia is 3-12 when starting its season at home.

The Red Sox are 31-22 against the Phillies all-time in interleague play, including 17-14 at Philadelphia. Pablo Sandoval signed with Boston as a free agent after seven seasons with the Giants. Sandoval is coming off a 2014 postseason that saw him tally 26 hits, the most ever by a player in a single postseason. He has at least 25 doubles in each of the last six seasons while striking out 85 times or fewer in each season; only Adrian Beltre has matched that feat.

Chase Utley has hit at least 10 home runs while batting .250 or better in each of the last 11 seasons, tied with Matt Holliday for the longest active streak in the National League. Utley's 53 extra-base hits last season led National League second basemen.

Clay Buchholz had a down year in 2014, going 8-11 with a 5.34 ERA after a 2013 campaign in which he went 12-1 with a 1.74 ERA. His +3.60 increase in ERA was the largest ever for a player that stayed with the same team (minimum 100 IP in both seasons). Buchholz went 0-1 with an 8.66 ERA in four interleague starts last season after going 4-0 with a 3.08 ERA against the NL prior to 2014.

Cole Hamels went 9-9 with a 2.46 ERA last season, his fifth consecutive season tossing at least 200 innings. Hamels has 1707 strikeouts in his career, third most since his debut in 2006 (Felix Hernandez -- 1874, Justin Verlander -- 1823). Hamels is just 8-13 with a 4.54 ERA in 29 career interleague starts.
