Real Madrid's hopes of winning the Spanish league could be in danger if they fail to overcome Valencia's surprising first-half lead.
There was little the Madrid defence could do, however, as the first goal was created thanks to a perfect cross into the box that eluded defenders.
Jose Gaya was the architect of the goal when his curling cross into the box missed Fabio Coentrao's out-stretched foot and fell to Paco Alcácer for the toe-poke finish.
Valencia added a second minutes later when Javi Fuego's header beat Iker Casillas.
