Tevez's penalty the difference as Juventus edge Real Madrid

An entertaining fixture complete with attacking football, a penalty shot and blood saw Juventus emerge with a 2-1 win over reigning champions Real Madrid in the first leg of the two sides' Champions League semifinal.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Real Madrid took the pitch in an uncharacteristic 4-4-2 formation that likely stemmed from the absence of Luka Modric, who is dealing with a sprained MCL. Sergio Ramos was once again pushed up into the club's midfield, while Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo were paired together in front of goal.
  • Juventus deployed a 4-3-1-2 formation in which Stefano Sturaro was a surprise inclusion as Roberto Pereyra started on the bench. The move was likely aimed at providing a defensive cover alongside the ever-aging Andrea Pirlo.
  • Supporters of Juventus unveiled a wonderful tifo ahead of kickoff that read: "We Are Ready." Suspiciously, Barcelona announced on Monday that they were planning a tifo with the same message for the first leg of their semifinal clash versus Bayern Munich.
  • The opening moments of the match were packed with end-to-end drama, as Real Madrid were awarded a free kick in a threatening position that Bale blasted into Juventus's wall. Iker Casillas was subsequently forced to make a scrambling save on Alvaro Morata.
  • Juventus 1, Real Madrid 0: Juventus drew first blood in the eighth minute, when Carlos Tevez fired a powerful shot that Casillas palmed directly to an onside Morata. The No. 9 tapped the ball into the back of the net, sending Juventus Stadium into hysterics while he decided not to celebrate against his former club.
  • Morata's goal was thoroughly deserved given Juventus's early pressure.
  • Real Madrid responded well to Juventus's goal, piling on the pressure in the following minutes. Toni Kroos forced a save out of Gianluigi Buffon from 25 yards out and Raphael Varane headed a high ball over the crossbar from 12 yards out.
  • Juventus 1, Real Madrid 1: Carlo Ancelotti's side were rewarded for their pressure in the 27th minute. James Rodriguez acrobatically sent a bouncing ball into the six-yard box, where Ronaldo was waiting to casually head the ball past Buffon.
  • Ronaldo's goal placed him ahead of Lionel Messi as the all-time top scorer in the Champions League and extended one of his own records.
  • A comical moment took place towards the end of the first half, as Ronaldo fired a ball directly at referee Martin Atkinson only one minute after the pair had engaged in a verbal confrontation.
  • Real Madrid should have taken the lead just before the interval, when they strung together an excellent passing sequence that allowed Isco to send in a pinpoint cross for Rodriguez. However, the Colombian phenom somehow headed the ball off the crossbar from two yards out.
  • Juventus 2, Real Madrid 1: A slow start to the second half was quickly cranked up when Atkinson pointed to the penalty spot in the 56th minute. Morata and Tevez had embarked on a 2-on-2 situation that saw Dani Carvajal go in for a clumsy challenge on the Argentine forward, and Tevez thumped his shot straight down the middle.
  • Where would Juventus's Champions League campaign be without Tevez?
  • To say that Buffon was happy about Tevez's goal would be an understatement.
  • Sturaro was replaced by Andrea Barzagli in the 64th minute in a sign that Juventus were set to carry out a defensive approach to the remainder of the game.
  • In a moment that every Juventus supporter could have foreseen, Giorgio Chiellini was once again forced to wrap bandages around his head after a collision with Bale resulted in a blood-stained shirt. Everybody makes Chiellini bleed his own blood.
  • There were calls for a penalty in the 83rd minute, when Stephan Lichtsteiner barged into Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez as the pair chased a ball out of Juventus's box. Atkinson ignored Real Madrid's pleas.
  • Juventus produced one last threatening opportunity in second-half stoppage time, as Pirlo curled a wonderful free kick to the far post, where Llorente was unable to properly connect from four yards out and sent a harmless header directly into Casillas's hands.
  • The second leg of the tie goes May 13 at the Estadio Bernabeu.
