David Silva is in talks with Valencia over a potential return to the club, but the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic is complicating negotiations, sources told Rob Dawson of ESPN.
Silva's contract with Manchester City expires June 30 and he's already confirmed he'll be leaving at that time.
Valencia are eager to re-sign the 34-year-old midfielder, who left Spain for the Premier League 10 years ago. The diminutive veteran has been offered a three-year contract by his former team, Dawson added.
But talks between the two parties are being hindered by Silva's impending contract limbo due to the ongoing hiatus caused by the pandemic.
As is the case with other soon-to-be free agents, it's unclear what will happen if the Premier League's season isn't completed by the time Silva's current contract runs out. FIFA has suggested that expiring contracts be extended until the campaign is finished, but the legal implications of such a directive remain murky.
In order to see out his final season at the Etihad, Dawson notes that Silva will have to sign a short-term extension.
Silva, who's made over 400 appearances with Manchester City and is widely regarded as one of the Premier League's greatest imports, has also been linked with David Beckham's MLS franchise, Inter Miami.
