Las Palmas relegated from La Liga after 3-year stay

Las Palmas couldn't fight off the spectre of relegation any longer.

Stuck in the drop zone for much of the season, the islanders suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at home to Alaves on Sunday, which ended their three-year stay in La Liga.

Las Palmas joins Malaga as the first two teams in La Liga history to be relegated with four matches still to play, according to stats guru MisterChip.

Fans shouted obscenities at the players as they conceded four goals in a porous second half. Las Palmas midfielder Vicente Gomez walked off the pitch in tears.

Las Palmas had been rooted to the bottom of the La Liga standings for months. Paco Jemez replaced Pako Ayestaran on Dec. 21, but results hardly changed.

The midseason departures of wingers Vitolo and Jonathan Vieira left La Union Deportiva without much firepower up front. Indeed, Las Palmas has only managed to score nine goals in the 16 league matches that Jemez has overseen.

Jemez said he regrets staying on at the club, seemingly citing the decision to sell Vieira to China as the death knell for the season.
