Ronaldo surpasses Sanchez for most penalties scored in La Liga history
The man who scored a decisive penalty kick in last year's Champions League final made history from 12 yards out at Estadio de la Ceramica.
On Sunday, in the second half of Real Madrid's fixture at Villarreal, Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed Hugo Sanchez for most penalties scored in La Liga history, converting a spot-kick in the 74th minute.
Real Madrid was awarded a penalty when Bruno Soriano was controversially flagged for a handball. Fran Escriba was livid and Roberto Soldado, sitting on Villarreal's bench, was shown a yellow card. But the disagreement didn't bother Ronaldo, who calmly slotted the ball past Sergio Asenjo to surpass Sanchez.
Not long after Ronaldo's record-breaking penalty, Alvaro Morata scored Real Madrid's third goal of the night, and Los Blancos held on for a 3-2 victory that restored their place atop La Liga.
