Real Madrid, Bayern unveil jerseys made from recycled ocean waste

Bayern Munich and Real Madrid will attempt to stem the tide of ocean pollution.

The two European giants unveiled the environmentally conscious tops that will be featured in matches this month.

German sportswear company Adidas, which sponsors both teams, has partnered with Parley - an environmentalist group that raises awareness on the poor condition of the world's oceans - to create jerseys made from plastic waste collected from the ocean.

A statement on Adidas' website reads:

A world first for Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. The clubs pay tribute to the ocean with their first football jerseys made from Parley Ocean Plastic. Watch the jerseys in action during FC Bayern Munich vs. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (Nov. 5) and Real Madrid vs. Sporting Gijon (Nov. 26).

Bayern midfielder Xabi Alonso told the German team's website that the cause is especially important to him considering he grew up on the Spanish coastline.

"I'm a child of the beaches of Spain, so I'm really happy to wear a shirt entirely made of recycled ocean waste. It's a great opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the oceans," he said.
