Atletico Madrid reaches €25M deal with Benfica for Nico Gaitan
The Argentine contingent at Atletico Madrid is set to grow.
The Rojiblancos confirmed Thursday that midfielder Nicolas Gaitan will join the club from Benfica, with the Portuguese side noting that a €25-million fee for the 28-year-old midfielder has been agreed upon.
"The midfielder is currently playing the Copa America with Argentina, and will travel to Madrid after the tournament that is being held in the United States, to finish all the necessary formalities so he can join the red and white team," a statement read.
Gaitan, long rumoured to be a target of Manchester United, joined Benfica in 2010, where he played 252 matches and scored 41 goals.
At the Vicente Calderon, he'll link up with compatriot Diego Simeone, whose squad, boasting some of the world's best South American talent, is rife with Argentine influence: Luciano Vietto, Angel Correa, Matias Kranevitter, and Augusto Fernandez all ply their trade for Atletico.
