Barcelona will be without a tandem of fringe players for Wednesday's Champions League second leg trip against Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.

Both Rafinha and Thomas Vermaelen have been ruled out of the quarter-final tilt with La Liga rivals Atletico, the Catalans announced Monday.

"The midfielder, who recently returned to action following a long knee injury, will be sidelined in the coming days," a club statement said about the Brazilian midfielder.

Some guys have all the luck, and then there's Rafinha.

Sidelined for seven months with an ACL tear, Rafinha returned to fitness for a substitute's appearance in the first leg, paired with a start during Saturday's defeat at Real Sociedad. The 23-year-old was taken off at the half for Andres Iniesta with a left adductor strain.

Vermaelen, who in his second season with the Catalans, has made 20 appearances for Luis Enrique's lot, but will have to wait for his 21st after suffering an elongation in the soleus of his right leg in training.

Barcelona travel to the capital with a 2-1 advantage over Atletico, looking to win its second consecutive Champions League and fifth in a decade.
