Investigators have located an unidentified body in the underwater wreckage of the plane that was carrying Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson.
The Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) confirmed the discovery Monday, two weeks after the pair disappeared while transporting the footballer to south Wales from the Pays de la Loire region in western France.
"The remotely operated vehicle (ROV) carried out a further search of the area overnight, but did not identify any additional pieces of wreckage," the AAIB announced, according to the BBC.
"Tragically, in video footage from the ROV, one occupant is visible amidst the wreckage. The AAIB is now considering the next steps, in consultation with the families of the pilot and passenger, and the police," the statement added.
No decision has been made to raise the wreckage to the surface and the AAIB has added that an interim report on the incident will be published within the month.
The discovery of a body comes a day after a privately funded underwater search began. On Sunday, fragments from the Piper Malibu aircraft were located on the seabed of the English Channel as part of a search by lead oceanographer marine scientist David Mearns.
