Spain, coasting through the opening round of Euro 2016, looked destined to earn top spot in Group D heading into Tuesday's contest against Croatia, brushing away the competition with its trademark slick passing and clever movement.

Leading 1-0 on 45 minutes in Bordeaux, everything seemed to be going to plan. Croatia then decided to obliterate that plan.

An 87th-minute winner from Ivan Perisic - after Nikola Kalinic had equalised just before the interval - saw Croatia steal top spot in the section with a 2-1 victory over the two-time reigning champion, a result that sees La Furia Roja slip to second place, and a meeting with Italy in the Round of 16 on Monday.

Alvaro Morata's early strike got Spain off to a flying start, but, despite the absence of key man Luka Modric through injury, Croatia battled back.

Spain captain Sergio Ramos saw a penalty saved by Danijel Subasic 18 minutes from time. And that miss proved vital when Perisic snuck the ball home at David De Gea's near post.

Croatia will now meet one of the best third-placed sides in Lens on Saturday.
