Switzerland nabs knockout berth as France wins group; Albania still alive

It wasn't pretty, but Switzerland did the business.

By virtue of Sunday's dour goalless draw against France, the Swiss secured second place in Group A, and with that automatic qualification into the knockout stages of Euro 2016. Les Bleus emerged as group winners, as was expected by virtually every prognosticator on the planet.

In the group's concurrent match, meanwhile, Albania recorded a historic 1-0 win over Romania, but, with three points, will now have to wait to learn if that's enough to reach the next round of the competition as one of the tournament's best third-place teams.

The French, spurred by much-maligned midfielder Paul Pogba, impressed for stretches of the contest, with the angular star smacking the crossbar with a vicious left-footed strike in the early moments.

Substitute Dimitri Payet rocketed a volley off the crossbar in the waning minutes, with those two chances sandwiching a rather drab encounter that was notable more for the flimsy fabric of the Swiss kits than the action at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.

Over in Lyon, Albania's first-ever win at a major international competition came courtesy of a first-half header from Armando Sadiku, the striker's tally leading to manic, beautiful celebration on the Albanian touchline.

Gianni De Biasi's men now sit on three points and are in with a shot at qualifying for the next round as a third-place finisher, though Albania's minus-two goal differential could prove a significant issue.
