Croatia denied last-16 berth after late collapse to Czechs

Croatia surrendered a two-goal lead on Friday after failing to stem the mounting late pressure from Czech Republic, and perhaps also struggling with the lengthy delay incurred by its over-zealous supporters.

Goals from Milan Skoda and a Tomas Necid penalty helped the Czechs draw level from 2-0 down, and they came on either side of Croatian fans throwing flares and small explosives onto the pitch. It's behaviour could see Croatia's Football Federation in hot water with UEFA.

Before those flashpoints, Croatia was ahead and cruising through finishes from Ivan Perisic and Ivan Rakitic. It looked like a seamless route for Ante Cacic's side into the knockout rounds, but the collapse now begs questions about its ability to upset Europe's supposed elite at the finals - a fate many already predicted for this talented squad.

The draw keeps the Czechs alive with a chance of claiming a place in Group D's top two in the final matchday on June 21. Croatia, meanwhile, faces a tough ask of bettering Spain in its last group clash, with a runner-up finish meaning a likely meeting with the defensively stout Italy.

Croatia was easily the most comfortable in the opening stanza, but it was a period lacking in any drama or attacking prowess. The rare bright spot was orchestrated by Perisic's dancing feet, resulting in a goal.

The Inter Milan winger was allowed to saunter forward due to the Czech backline's retreat, and then all it took was his oft-used step-over to steal half a yard from Tomas Sivok and slide the ball into the bottom corner.

The second came on 59 minutes and courtesy of Rakitic. The Czech Republic backline was extremely accommodating in parting the ways for the Barcelona man, as he finished with a delicious lob over Petr Cech.

Croatia was sailing through and key man Modric was withdrawn amid slight fears over his groin, but he was smiling as he exited with progression into the Round of 16 seemingly booked, and another commanding midfield performance under his belt.

But the late double salvo coming via Skoda's towering header and Necid's penalty after Domagoj Vida handled in the area blew Group B wide open. The final games between the four could provide some real theatre.
