Hungary earns historic win over old foe Austria

Goals from Adam Szalai and Zoltan Stieber secured Hungary a shocking 2-0 victory over neighbour Austria on Tuesday, its first major tournament victory since the 1986 World Cup.

Proudly donning muddy-kneed jogging bottoms, veteran Gabor Kiraly stood firm in the Hungary goal, becoming - at 40 - the oldest player fielded at the European Championships, but his outfield colleagues stole the show.

The former Crystal Palace shot stopper joined in the celebrations when Stieber secured three points with a lush lob in the 87th minute after Szalai grabbed the first strike, overcoming personal goalscoring woes after some fine interplay with the tireless and diminutive Laszlo Kleinheisler.

Austro-Hungarian relations were renewed in Bordeaux some 98 years after the dissolution of their empire, but the clash between two halves of the former world power was one of the more unfancied matches of Euro 2016's calendar.

Hungary served up what could be the biggest surprise of the tournament against popular dark horse Austria, though, giving its country its first crop of footballing heroes since shaking off the shackles of communism in 1989. The names of Szalai and Stieber will be sung through the streets of Budapest, comparisons with greats Ferenc Puskas and Sandor Kocsis inevitable.

It was a disciplined performance by Bernd Storck's side, frustrating the likes of David Alaba and Marko Arnautovic, and leaving the ungainly yet undeniably dangerous striker Marc Janko ineffective. The Hungarians were patient and industrious, the midfield continually working as a second line of defence in front of the back four.

Szalai's finish sparked jubilant scenes in the stands as fans struggled to comprehend a potential victory some 30 years in the making:

Austria was reduced to 10 men shortly afterwards, when Aleksandar Dragovic upended Tamas Kadar in a desperate attempt to win the ball during a scramble in the Hungarian box. It was the 25-year-old's second yellow, and he made his nation's task much more difficult.

The Hungarians' second was stunning. Latching onto a long ball as Austria committed men forward in search of an equaliser, Stieber audaciously flicked the ball over the onrushing Robert Almer to put his country out of sight.

The win puts Hungary with a good chance of securing a second-placed berth in Group F and progression into the knockout rounds. Portugal is the favourite to finish atop the four rounded out by minnow Iceland, who's making its first appearance in a major tournament.
