Ruben Semedo was refused bail after appearing in court Thursday on charges of robbery, assault, illegal detention, possession of illegal weapons, and attempted murder.

The Villarreal defender, 23, was arrested two days earlier for his alleged group involvement in holding a man who they threatened with a gun, according to Reuters.

"The court of Lliria has ordered provisional detention, without bail for Villarreal player Ruben Semedo," the court Tribunal Superior de Justicia de la Comunidad Valenciana told BBC Sport.

"The judge has charged the player with attempted murder, injuries, threats, illegal detention, illegal possession of weapons and robbery with violence."

Semedo represented Portugal twice at the European Under-21s Championships in June, and cost Villarreal €14 million when he signed from Sporting CP in the same month. Injuries have restricted Semedo to only three La Liga starts this campaign, with his last appearance coming when he was substituted 48 minutes into a 2-0 home defeat to Barcelona.

"Ruben was a victim of fraud, a large-scale swindle, probably of a financial nature," Semedo's agent Catio Balde claimed to television network TSF, as reported by Reuters. "Against this situation he didn't react in the best possible way, but he was the victim. From what I've seen on Spanish television, it's a regrettable situation and not correct, but Ruben wasn't involved in this.

"The alleged kidnapping did not take place. It's a total lie that there was a kidnapping and torture. The gun didn't belong to Semedo even though they found it in his house."
