Report: David Moyes expected to open talks with Newcastle about becoming next manager

David Moyes is reportedly in the frame to take over at Newcastle United.

Moyes is expected to open talks with Newcastle over the next few days about becoming the Magpies' next manager, according to Luke Edwards of The Telegraph. The Tyneside club is reportedly expected to sack Steve McClaren after a 3-1 defeat at home to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday marked its fifth loss in six fixtures.

Unemployed since he was fired by Real Sociedad in November, Moyes is apparently perceived by Newcastle as "the best man to try and save" the Magpies from relegation. He allegedly understands that it would be risky to work at the club given its struggles on and off the pitch under Mike Ashley, the team's unpopular owner, and would want assurances about player recruitment.

Ashley reportedly tried to appoint Moyes as Newcastle's manager in the past, is impressed by the Scottish tactician's spell at Everton, and will urge Lee Charnley, the Magpies sporting director, to sack McClaren.

Following Newcastle's defeat to Bournemouth, McClaren vowed that quitting isn't on his radar, saying: "I don't do that. I have had enough experience. I've been through this with chants like that (calling for his head). That's the perils of being a manager - and especially of this team."

Faustino Asprilla, a cult hero at Newcastle, took to Twitter during the match, expressing his desire to see Newcastle and McClaren go their separate ways.

Newcastle is 19th in the Premier League standings and in jeopardy of going down to the Championship for the second time since the 2008-09 season.
