James McCarthy's injury woes continue after the Irishman suffered a reoccurrence of a hip problem in the 4-3 loss to Stoke City on Monday.

The midfielder could also be joined by teammate Tom Cleverley on the sidelines when Everton meets Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park on Saturday.

McCarthy started the match against Stoke and laid on an assist for Romelu Lukaku in the 22nd minute before he hobbled off four minutes later. Cleverley was his replacement, but the former Manchester United man was also forced to withdraw on 65 minutes with an Achilles injury.

"James McCarthy clearly is not going to be available for the weekend," Martinez told the club website. "We are going to get a bit more information today and tomorrow because his old injury flared up. We need to find out exactly what the situation is."

A decision on Cleverley's availability will be made closer to Saturday's game.

In brighter news, skipper Phil Jagielka continues to progress in his rehabilitation from a serious ankle ligament injury.

"I expect the weekend will be too early for Phil Jagielka but I expect him to be involved after that," Martinez revealed.

That would make the defender available for either the League Cup semifinal first leg against Manchester City on Jan. 6, or the visit of Dagenham and Redbridge in the FA Cup three days later.
