VIDEO: Brawl between Leeds United and Eintracht Frankfurt fans erupts after friendly
A friendly match between Leeds United and Eintracht Frankfurt in Austria on Tuesday was marred by violence when supporters from both clubs clashed after the final whistle.
Twenty-five people were arrested as a result of the trouble, with local police blaming the violence in Eugendorf on the German supporters following Eintracht Frankfurt's 2-1 victory, according to Phil Hay of the Yorkshire Evening News.
Players from both teams had left the pitch before the violence erupted. Fans donned balaclavas during the melee, which saw numerous supporters punching, kicking, and throwing objects at one another.
Fighting moved from the pitch to the car park when police attempted to intervene with batons and dogs.
"At the square in front of the stadium, runaway Leeds fans were again attacked by the Frankfurt fans," Salzburg police said in a statement.
"Eventually the situation moved to the centre of Eugendorf where action was taken to stop the attacks, among other things a pepper-spray operation by the police."
One Leeds supporter said the incident appears to have been premeditated, claiming he and other fans attempted to applaud the opposing fans before Frankfurt supporters began to attack.
“A few of us went over to applaud the Frankfurt fans. I was going to shake their hands. Then their ultras jumped over the (advertising) boards and started attacking us. Some were wearing balaclavas and we were outnumbered,” supporter Neil Slinn said.
