Reece James is calling time on his career at Old Trafford.

Wigan Athletic announced Tuesday that the 21-year-old left wing-back is joining the club from Manchester United, and put pen to paper on a three-year deal.

James burst onto the scene last year when United included him in its squad for a preseason tour. He scored two goals in his first senior outing, a match that saw Louis van Gaal's side thrash the LA Galaxy 7-0 at the Rose Bowl.

He was named to United's bench for its opening fixture of the last Premier League season and went on to make his competitive debut for the club in its 4-0 Capital One Cup defeat to Milton Keynes Dons.

Gary Caldwell, Wigan's manager, said of the signing: "Reece is a young player with a bright future. He has been schooled by one of the best academies around and has impressed both at under-21 level and whilst on loan.

"He is another who will strengthen competition on that left side, and has played as a full-back, or in a wing back role. Once again, there were clubs after him so we're delighted to add him to the squad."
