Dick Advocaat on future at Sunderland: 'They have made me an offer'

Tears of joy could be seen running down Dick Advocaat's face on Monday after a scoreless draw at the Emirates Stadium secured Sunderland's place in next season's Premier League.

It was a somewhat remarkable sight given that Advocaat's resume includes stints as manager of the Netherlands, Borussia Monchengladbach, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Belgium, and Serbia.

Where was this profound love for Sunderland developed?

Having only signed with the club until the end of the season, Advocaat's future at the Stadium of Light remains clouded by uncertainty. However, a decision from the manager will arrive by Thursday, and owner Ellis Short along with sporting director Lee Congerton are clearly keen to retain the man that some supporters have dubbed "Magic Dick."

"They want me to stay definitely," Advocaat confirmed to Sky Sports, according to the Guardian. "They already discussed it a couple of weeks ago but I have to be honest to everybody, to my family and the club. I will take a holiday and in that week I will let them know what I decide to do."

The 67-year-old said that details need to be ironed out before he can decide one way or the other.

"They have made me an offer, yes," Advocaat said. "It is in principle not so important in that way, it is also important what the club wants. Can they invest or not? That's also important to know for myself before I take that decision."

Upon taking over at Sunderland in mid-March, Advocaat found a club left in tatters - and a sure bet for relegation - by former manager Gus Poyet. Through eight fixtures, though, Advocaat has transformed the club, guiding them to three wins, three draws, and two losses.
