Arsenal manager says Wilshere will see specialist to determine severity of injured ankle
Although an initial forecast suggested Jack Wilshere will miss a few games because of an ankle injury, a meeting with a specialist could lead to a substantial amount of time on the sidelines for the Arsenal midfielder.
Manager Arsene Wenger said the timetable for Wilshere's return will be clearer following the meeting. He avoided any speculation about the severity of the injury.
X-rays after Arsenal's match on Saturday against Manchester United revealed that the English international had not suffered a serious left ankle injury.
"He has a big ankle sprain," Wenger told reporters, ahead of Wednesday's Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund. "I don't want to talk about it because I'm not a specialist medically."
"The first news is we are told he will be out for the next few games. For how long, he will need to see a specialist."
Wilshere's troubling history of ankle and foot injuries make matters worse. Several have forced him to miss considerable time during his short career.
Wilshere suffered a hairline fracture to the navicular bone in his left foot in March. He also faced multiple problems with his other ankle between 2011 and 2013, spending several months on the sidelines due to two stress fractures.
