Report: Chelsea agree to fee with PSG for David Luiz
David Luiz is on the verge of becoming the most expensive defender in the world, as Chelsea reportedly agree to a transfer fee with Paris Saint-Germain that would net the London club close to £40 million, according to Joe Hare of the Telegraph.
The report continues, saying the two teams are working on exact figures, but they "have agreed in principle" and hope to complete the transfer by the weekend.
It would be quite the haul for Chelsea if they're able to get anything close to the reported fee. It's been a turbulent few years for the Brazilian since he arrived at the club from Benfica for £21 million in 2011.
While he's shown glimpses of greatness in both defending and attacking for Chelsea, he's also found himself at the centre of controversy for his failures to get back on defense from attacking positions and his unpredictable decision making. His flaws led to criticism about his maturity and numerous weeks on the bench under manager Jose Mourinho.
Luiz, 27, lost his weekly starting spot to veteran John Terry, as he only made 15 Premier League appearances for Mourinho's squad last season and failed to get on the score-sheet for the first time in his career at Stamford Bridge. He scored seven goals in all competitions for the Blues during the 2012/13 campaign and made 29 Premier League appearances before the Portuguese manager arrived.
Terry recently signed a one-year deal to remain at the club next season and showed promise when paired with Gary Cahill. Even though he fell out of favour as the team's preferred centre-half, a move to PSG allows Luiz to start fresh with a new team and gives him a chance pair up with Brazilian teammate Thiago Silva.
The money Chelsea makes on a potential deal would be a big boost for the club, as it will help them comply with UEFA's Financial Fair Play guidelines during their pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa. Chelsea have been linked with the Spanish forward and have reportedly agreed to a £32 million fee.
