Juventus and Livorno appeal FIFA's ruling on former Chelsea player Mutu
Juventus and Livorno have both appealed to the court of arbitration for sport (Cas) after FIFA had ordered the two Italian clubs to help former player Adrian Mutu repay €21 million to Chelsea.
Mutu was released by Chelsea in 2004 after he tested positive for cocaine, and the English club would eventually sue the Romanian in an effort to recover the money that they paid to sign him just one year earlier.
After serving a seven-month ban, Mutu would return to the pitch in Italy with Juventus -- and later Livorno -- which is why the two clubs are involved.
Via the Guardian, Juventus administrator Aldo Mazzia is hopeful that the ruling will be overturned:
"I admit that we were left very surprised by the ruling against us," the Juventus administrator Aldo Mazzia said. "But I believe we have a good probability to overturn this decision and we will use every channel possible to make our reasons heard. There are two crucial steps, one is the Cas and the other one is to go to the Swiss federal court eventually."
Mutu, now playing in Ligue 1 with Ajaccio, was initially ordered to pay Chelsea €17.7 million but has maintained all along that he does not have the necessary funds to meet that total.
