Ipswich relegated as all 3 promoted teams go straight back down
Ipswich Town became the third and final club to get relegated from the Premier League after losing 3-0 at Newcastle United on Saturday.
The Blues were reduced to 10 players before Newcastle striker Alexander Isak scored right before halftime to put the hosts ahead. Ipswich's fate was further cemented after second-half goals from Dan Burn and William Osula.
The defeat confirmed the club's immediate return to the Championship with Leicester City and Southampton.
It's the second Premier League season in a row in which all three promoted teams from the Championship were immediately relegated.
Ipswich entered the season with hopes of retaining their place in the Premier League after more than two decades in the lower divisions. But despite the optimism surrounding them and their coach Kieran McKenna after two consecutive promotion-winning campaigns in League One and the Championship, the club instantly looked out of its depth and opened the Premier League season on a 10-game winless streak.
Ipswich registered their first win in November, against Tottenham Hotspur, but their struggles - especially in defense - persisted. McKenna's side went on to win just two of the next 18 games.
Ipswich never recovered from the dismal run of form, and they found themselves in the thick of a relegation fight from which few thought they'd escape.
Ipswich sit 15 points back of 17th-placed West Ham and have conceded the third-most goals (74) this season behind Leicester (76) and Southampton (80).
