Report: West Brom beats Newcastle to sign Liverpool's Sturridge on loan

A move to Newcastle appeared be on the horizon for out-of-favour Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge, but now it looks as though West Bromwich Albion will hijack a move for the English striker.

Sturridge was said to be interested in joining the Magpies on loan until the end of the season, and Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph reported the Premier League rivals engaged in negotiations over a temporary deal.

However, Sturridge will instead join West Brom on loan after he completes a medical with the Midlands side later Monday, according to John Percy of The Telegraph.

Regardless of who signs Sturridge on loan, his new club would pay the forward's weekly salary of £120,000 in full.

News of Newcastle and West Brom's apparent interest in signing the 28-year-old follows a report last week that suggested Inter Milan had offered a "significant" loan fee for a similar deal.

Sevilla has also emerged as a possible destination, but the Spanish side has yet to table an offer.

Sturridge is understood to be keen to leave Liverpool in order to find regular playing time as he attempts to secure a place in the English national squad ahead of this summer's World Cup in Russia.

Newcastle, however, could ultimately turn its attention to its top target Nicolai Jorgensen from Feyenoord, according to Keith Downie of Sky Sports. It appears Feyenoord's £20-million valuation is the only obstacle preventing the 27-year-old Danish forward from moving to England.
