Wenger angry that 'outstanding' Arsenal got nothing from United clash
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is upset his players couldn't extract three points from their "outstanding" performance Saturday against Manchester United.
The Gunners outshot and outplayed the visiting Red Devils for large stretches of the match, but ultimately lost the contest 3-1 thanks to defensive miscues. David De Gea frustrated Arsenal time and again, producing a joint-Premier League record 14 saves during the blitz.
"I don't know if you've watched top-level games, but when you have 33 shots on goal in a game of that stature, it means our dominance was top class," Wenger told reporters, including the Evening Standard's James Benge.
"But I'm angry and disappointed because at the end we have nothing to show for it. Even at 2-1, we made another mistake at the back that made the game more difficult."
Wenger applauded De Gea's spectacular efforts and instead placed the blame on his players' poor start. Two mistakes at the back in the first 11 minutes put Arsenal into an early 2-0 hole. Although United only had four shots on target, it showed a ruthlessness in front of goal that Arsenal lacked.
"We have produced an excellent performance but we conceded three goals," the Frenchman added. "We had at least 10 chances and we were not efficient enough in the box. That's the reality."
Arsenal dropped to fifth place in the Premier League standings, but remains three points ahead of Tottenham.
