United's Fellaini to miss at least 2 weeks with MCL sprain

Marouane Fellaini won't be available for selection when Manchester United resumes its Premier League campaign against Liverpool, suffering an MCL injury during Belgium's World Cup qualifying win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Royal Belgian Football Association estimates that the injury will keep Fellaini out of action for at least "a couple of weeks."

Fellaini suffered the knock less than a half hour after kickoff when an opponent landed on his left leg, as Belgium went on to secure a come-from-behind 4-3 win.

There were fears that the injury would force him to miss a substantial period, but a scan revealed that there was not significant damage to the ligament.

However, he will be unavailable for a series of crucial league ties as United attempts to keep pace with Manchester City atop the Premier League.

Along with missing United's encounter with rival Liverpool Saturday, Fellaini is also expected to miss league matches against Huddersfield Town and Tottenham, as well as a pair of Champions League clashes with Benfica.

If he's able to avoid a setback, Fellaini could be available for United's trip to Chelsea on Nov. 5.

The timing of the knock derails a promising run of form for Fellaini ever since his role was increased in the wake of Paul Pogba going down with a hamstring injury, which is expected to keep him out until the November international break.

Before the international break, Fellaini was named the man of the match after his two-goal performance against Crystal Palace.
