Manchester City boasts 17 consecutive victories in the Premier League. The Citizens are beating club after club without moving out of second gear, and supporters can only wonder what it will take for them to be stopped.

But, while City's winning streak is the most substantial in Premier League history, it's not the longest to ever be witnessed in European football's top five leagues, which include the Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga, and Ligue 1. That honour belongs to Bayern Munich, who, in 2013-14, won 19 consecutive games in the top flight of German football between October and March.

Bayern set the record while Pep Guardiola was the club's manager, and City is two games away from equalling the winning streak under the Catalan tactician. The Citizens' next three matches include a fixture at Newcastle United, a date at Crystal Palace, and a battle against Watford at the Etihad Stadium, meaning there's a good chance their run hits the 20-game mark and they shatter the record set by Bayern.

Here's a look at the longest winning streaks in each of European football's top five leagues, some of which stretch over the course of two seasons:

  • Bundesliga: Bayern Munich - 19 games (2013-14)
  • Premier League: Manchester City - 17 games (2017-18)*
  • Serie A: Internazionale - 17 games (2006-07)
  • La Liga: Barcelona - 16 games (2010-11), Real Madrid - 16 games (2015-16, 2016-17)
  • Ligue 1: AS Monaco - 16 games (2016-17, 2017-18)
