Confederations Cup: Russia comfortably beats New Zealand in opening match
Russia, usually a disappointment at major tournaments, kicked off its hosting of the Confederations Cup with three points on Saturday.
In a rematch from the 1982 World Cup, when the Soviet Union was still around, Russia defeated New Zealand 2-0 at Zenit Arena in the Confederations Cup's first game. The host was rewarded for its dominance in the 31st minute, when the Kiwis coughed up possession and, after Denis Glushakov chipped Stefan Marinovic, Michael Boxall produced an own goal by deflecting the ball into the back of the net. Fedor Smolov sealed the game, finishing a passing sequence that he started in the 69th minute.
Marinovic was the only reason why New Zealand didn't lose by more than two goals, making one excellent save after another. Russia, taking the pitch with a new generation, outplayed the Kiwis from kick-off until the final whistle, and will have a chance to keep the good times rolling against Portugal on Wednesday.
