Report: U.S. star Carli Lloyd to join Manchester City
American superstar Carli Lloyd is on the verge of joining Manchester City of the FA Women's Super League, with the two-time reigning FIFA player of the year expected to finalize her move to England this week.
Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated reports Lloyd, 34, could make the switch as early as Wednesday.
Wahl expands:
Lloyd's agreement with Manchester City, the reigning Football Association Women's Super League (FAWSL) champion, would be a short-term contract that would allow her to return and play in the NWSL with the Houston Dash at the start of June.
The U.S. co-captain, who has scored 96 goals in 232 appearances with the USWNT, will be following in the footsteps of compatriots Alex Morgan (Lyon), Crystal Dunn (Chelsea), and Heather O'Reilly (Arsenal) by making a move to Europe this winter.
In Manchester, Lloyd will get the opportunity to partake in the women's Champions League - City is in the quarter-finals of the competition, which is slated to resume in March.
Should her soon-to-be new club make the tournament final, Lloyd will not return to Houston before June 1.
