Senegal's search for a first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title is off to a good start.

On Sunday, largely because of Tunisia's awfulness in front of goal, Senegal became the first team to win a fixture at the Africa Cup of Nations, leaving Stade de Franceville with a 2-0 Group B victory over Les Aigles de Carthage after a penalty kick from Sadio Mane and a header from Kara Mbodji.

Tunisia managed 15 shots in the match but lacked a finishing touch. Ahmed Akaichi skimmed the post with a header in the second minute, Youssef Msakni headed wide from two yards out, and a clearance from Mbodji struck the woodwork. No matter what Les Aigles des Carthage did, they couldn't beat Abdoulaye Diallo, and the final whistle signalled their first-ever loss to Senegal at an Africa Cup of Nations and the first time they've failed to score in a game at the tournament since 2013.

Meanwhile, Senegal took its chances despite producing what was a relatively ordinary display. Sadio Mane, the most expensive player at the Africa Cup of Nations given his reported £34-million price tag, opened the scoring in the 10th minute, converting a penalty with all the confidence in the world.

Mbodji subsequently doubled Senegal's lead, heading home a corner kick in the 30th minute that Aymen Mathlouthi should have saved.

The appetiser for Senegal's triumph saw Algeria and Zimbabwe play out a 2-2 draw in which Riyad Mahrez scored twice to salvage a point for the Desert Foxes. It was a cruel result for the Warriors, who performed admirably in their first match at the Africa Cup of Nations since 2006.
