Scans on Duncan Watmore's knee have confirmed Sunderland's fears.
The promising young midfielder is expected to miss the rest of the season after scans revealed cruciate ligament damage in his knee, according to James Hunter of the Chronicle.
The 22-year-old was forced to leave on a stretcher during Saturday's 2-1 victory over Leicester City when he was involved in a collision with defender Christian Fuchs.
A scan on his knee Monday revealed the extent of the damage as Watmore may also be in danger of missing the Under-21 European Championship with England.
Watmore appeared in 14 matches for David Moyes' struggling Sunderland squad.
The Tyne and Wear side sits in second-last place with 11 points through 14 matches.
