Manchester United's Wayne Rooney has called his treatment "disgraceful" after photos of the veteran forward at a wedding party while on international duty were published.

Rooney, who came on as a substitute during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal, has become a lightning rod for derision over the photos that depict the allegedly inebriated 31-year-old gatecrashing a wedding at the England team hotel in Watford, north of London.

"What’s been going on is disgraceful," Rooney offered, courtesy of the Guardian's Jamie Jackson. "I’m proud to play for my country and I’m proud of my achievements."

The Sun bought and published the pictures of Rooney, prompting the criticism that has emerged as the biggest story in English football.

A spokesman for Rooney addressed the hysteria surrounding the photos, saying, "Rather than going out, he chose to stay at the team hotel to relax and celebrate a fine England victory against Scotland."

The same week that Rooney donated the shirt he wore in the World Cup qualifying victory over Scotland to a terminally-ill eight-year-old boy from Sheffield, the Scouse-born forward is under the microscope not for charitable ventures, but for having a few pints in the team hotel.

And that criticism is clearly affecting the 119-time capped attacker.

"It’s not finished yet. I think what’s been going on is disgraceful. It shows a lack of respect and I think enough is enough. That’s all I want to say," Rooney added.
