Koeman wants Memphis Depay at Everton: 'I would like to sign him'

Ronald Koeman wants to offer Memphis Depay a lifeline.

The seldom-used Manchester United winger has languished on the bench since his move to Old Trafford last summer; he's yet to start a Premier League match this season under Jose Mourinho.

Though he's shown flashes of the brilliance that made United ship £25 million to PSV for his services, his time in England has been blighted by both a lack of minutes and a failure to capitalise on those rare opportunities.

As the likelihood of enjoying first-team football with the Red Devils dwindles by the day, the Dutchman looks like a prime candidate for a loan spell, or even a permanent move, come January. Everton's interest in the 22-year-old was speculated earlier in the week, and now Koeman has ended the conjecture by admitting he would like to bring his compatriot to Goodison Park.

"I would like to sign him. I think he's an interesting player. He has great individual qualities," the Dutch gaffer told Fox Sports' "De Tafel van Kees" show.

"He just needs to play games."

Koeman would know.

The former Feyenoord bench boss got a first-hand look at the skillful winger when he was on the touchline in his native Holland, watching Depay star for PSV prior to his high-priced Premier League switch.

Koeman, who admitted he tried to sign Depay while at Southampton, added: "At the start of his time at Manchester United, he showed how good he is."
