Martial, Schneiderlin miss Liverpool clash through injury; Rooney benched
Anthony Martial was not included in Manchester United's 18-man squad for the highly anticipated trip to Anfield, the Frenchman missing the contest after suffering an undisclosed injury in training on Saturday.
United noted that his compatriot Morgan Schneiderlin also picked up an ailment in the ill-fated training session.
Captain Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, will have to be content with a spot on the bench once again, as the Englishman spends his third consecutive contest riding the pine for the Red Devils.
Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho has left a bevy of high-priced talent in the stands: Memphis Depay, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Matteo Darmian are out of the squad.
The Portuguese tactician has opted to hand a surprise start to Ashley Young, while restoring oft-criticised Marouane Fellaini's spot in central midfield.
While the lineup lacks the dynamism of the XI that counterpart Jurgen Klopp rolled out, there seems to be a clear focus on exploiting Liverpool's perceived weakness on set pieces with a squad bountiful in height.
