Europe staves off American charge to win Ryder Cup

The Americans made it interesting with a Sunday charge, but the Ryder Cup is back in the hands of Team Europe.

Tommy Fleetwood supplied the winning point after driving the green on the 16th hole to win the cup back for the hosts and keep the Americans' 30-year road losing streak in the event going.

The Europeans front-loaded the lineup to secure the four points needed on Sunday to win the event. Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy and Tyrrell Hatton supplied 3.5 of those points to leave them on the cusp of victory.

The Americans made their run in the middle portion of the matches, winning three in a row to make things tense for a brief moment in Italy. However, Fleetwood put the competition to bed with a brilliantly struck driver to 23 feet after Rickie Fowler found the water off the tee at No. 16.

The final scoreline of 16.5-11.5 will see the Europeans claim the 10th Ryder Cup in the last 14 events and mark the fourth straight time the winning margin has been at least five points.

Singles results

Jon Rahm tied Scottie Scheffler

A heavyweight rematch from Whistling Straits kicked off the singles session in Italy with Jon Rahm facing Scottie Scheffler. The contest lived up to its billing with only six holes resulting in ties the entire match. Scheffler won holes 14 and 15 to take a 1-up lead to the final hole, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. After Rahm nearly holed a 90-footer for eagle, Scheffler had to make a chip from off the surface to secure the full point. He pushed to the right to see the match split, with both teams taking a deserved half-point.

Viktor Hovland wins 4&3 over Collin Morikawa

Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa tied their singles match at the Ryder Cup two years ago, but this time around there was a clear gap between the two players. Hovland raced out of the gates with three wins in the opening six holes to distance himself from the American. He added three more wins on the back to finish a sizzling 7-under through 15 holes in the 4&3 victory.

Patrick Cantlay wins 2&1 over Justin Rose

The hatless American hero continued his torrid play from Saturday afternoon with another strong showing in singles. Patrick Cantlay was bogey-free for the day en route to a 5-under score through 17 holes. While Cantlay was in strong form, Justin Rose made things as uncomfortable as possible with more magic around Marco Simone. He kept the match alive with some incredible putting down the stretch before Cantlay closed him out with a clutch birdie on No. 17.

Rory McIlroy wins 3&1 over Sam Burns

The incident on the 18th green Saturday lit a fire under Rory McIlroy, and he took that out on Sam Burns in the singles match. The 34-year-old torched Marco Simone with an outrageous 8-under total through 17 holes. The victory secured a 4-1-0 mark for McIlroy and made him the highest scorer on either team in this year's Ryder Cup. It also marked a personal-best output for the four-time major winner in his seventh appearance.

Max Homa wins 1-up over Matt Fitzpatrick

Cantlay is certainly the American who garnered the most attention, but Max Homa was undoubtedly the best player for the visitors this week. The rookie capped a brilliant debut with an incredible par save on the final hole to win his match versus Matt Fitzpatrick and keep the U.S. team alive. Homa was the only player on the American squad to participate in all five sessions and delivered 3.5 points.

Tyrrell Hatton wins 3&2 over Brian Harman

Hatton was another European who raced out to an early lead with three wins in the opening four holes. Harman would narrow the gap heading to the back nine, but Hatton delivered wins on 11 and 13 to push clear of his chaser. A brilliant bunker shot on the 16th to set up a tap-in birdie closed it out for the Englishman. Hatton was one of the stars all week for the hosts with a 3-0-1 overall mark.

Brooks Koepka wins 3&2 over Ludvig Aberg

The five-time major champion showed his class over the young emerging star with a comfortable 3&2 victory. Koepka held at least a 2-up lead for the majority of the match and ended things on the 16th green. The only LIV golfer in the event ended with a 1-1-1 record but suffered the worst foursomes loss in Ryder Cup history with a 9&7 setback alongside Scheffler.

Justin Thomas wins 2-up over Sepp Straka

Match 8 pitted Thomas against Straka in a match that looked very important for a large stretch of the day. The Austrian chipped in for eagle on the 16th hole to cut the deficit to 1-down and stood on the 18th tee with a chance at clinching the Cup for Europe. Fleetwood would end up taking care of that before Straka and Thomas completed 18, and Thomas secured the 2-up win with a birdie at the finisher.

Xander Schauffele wins 3&2 over Nicolai Hojgaard

Schauffele was able to completely flip this match after a very poor start to end up securing a comfortable victory. Hojgaard claimed two of the opening four holes before his American opponent turned a switch heading to the fifth. Schauffele claimed seven of the final 12 holes to win his first point at this year's Ryder Cup.

Shane Lowry tied Jordan Spieth

The energetic center of the European team was exactly that throughout the third-last match on Sunday, with Lowry bringing the passion against Spieth. This match also looked for a while like it could be the decider, and Lowry responded to the pressure with clutch birdies on No. 16 and 17. The Cup would be decided prior to the 18th, and Spieth ended up winning that hole to secure a tie.

Tommy Fleetwood wins 3&1 over Rickie Fowler

Match 11 ended up being the decider, with Fleetwood securing the cup on the 16th green. After Fowler drove his ball into the penalty area, the Englishman absolutely striped his onto the green to set up a 23-footer for eagle. He would lag that to the hole to earn a concession and secure at least a half-point to win the event for the hosts. Fleetwood ensured it was a full point in the contest with a brilliant tee shot to two feet on the 17th to end it.

Robert MacIntyre wins 2&1 over Wyndham Clark

The final match ended up not factoring in to the result, but MacIntyre made sure it would be a European point if his team needed it. The rookie never trailed in the contest and closed out Clark on the 17th for the 2&1 win. MacIntyre showed well in his debut with an overall record of 2-0-1.
