West Brom promoted, Brentford into playoffs after wild final day in Championship
West Bromwich Albion ended a two-year hiatus from the top flight, while Brentford have been made to wait for a Premier League debut following a shock home defeat to Barnsley that dramatically ensured safety for the Tykes on a delirious final matchday in the Championship.
Slaven Bilic's Baggies join Leeds United in earning automatic promotion to the Premier League after a 2-2 draw against Queens Park Rangers at the Hawthorns, while Brentford have been consigned to the playoffs alongside Fulham, Cardiff City, and Swansea City.
At the bottom of the table, Luton Town vaulted Charlton Athletic to secure safety with a 3-2 win over Blackburn Rovers. Charlton will be relegated to the third tier alongside Hull City and Wigan Athletic, who were docked 12 points for going into administration after a 1-1 draw with Fulham.
As predicted, a dozen simultaneous kickoffs rife with implications set the table for a frenzied finish littered with mixed fortunes.
West Brom, who entered the day clinging to a fragile one-point advantage on Brentford, secured a point courtesy of another standout performance from on-loan attacker Grady Diangana.
Diangana was again the catalyst for the Baggies, canceling out Ryan Manning's opener just before the break with a strike from a tight angle before setting up Callum Robinson with a deft cross five minutes after the interval. Eberechi Eze equalized for QPR at the hour mark, though for Bilic and Co., what was happening at Brentford was of more consequence than scoring a winner.
Bees stung by resilient Barnsley
Brentford's final league outing at Griffin Park did not go to plan. The Bees' melancholy was Barnsley's joy, with the Tykes snatching safety by way of Clarke Oduor's 90th-minute match-winner in a 2-1 smash-and-grab display.
Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest relinquished a playoff position for the first time since December with a humiliating 4-1 home defeat to Stoke City to finish seventh. Forest picked up just three points from their last six matches and suffered a six-goal swing on the final day to Swansea City, who vaulted them for sixth place with a 4-1 win against Reading.
The Swans will now face Brentford in the two-legged playoff semifinals on July 26 and 29, with Fulham and Cardiff City squaring off in the other matchup on July 27 and 30.
The playoff final is slated for Aug. 4.
Meanwhile, there was also plenty of moving and shaking at the bottom.
Wigan's financial violations and subsequent 12-point penalty were set to kick in following Tuesday's visit from Fulham, meaning the 1-1 draw at the DW Stadium plummeted the Latics to 23rd, just two points back of Brentford and safety. A win would have kept Wigan up.
Wigan were sandwiched in the bottom three by Charlton and Hull, both of whom slumped to comprehensive losses away from home to league winners Leeds and Cardiff City, respectively.
