Jesse Marsch is discussing a job vacancy just seven days after being axed by Leeds United.

Southampton held talks with the American on Monday as they search for Nathan Jones' successor, according to The Guardian's Ben Fisher.

Marsch - who previously oversaw the New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Salzburg, and RB Leipzig - has honed a high-pressing style of play similar to that of former Southhampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Southampton sacked Hasenhuttl, who spent two years in charge of RB Leipzig, in November after almost four years at the helm.

Leeds fired Marsch following a seven-match winless run. He signed four players from Red Bull clubs - Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams, Rasmus Kristensen, and Max Wober - during his one-year spell at Elland Road.

Ruben Selles, who became first-team lead coach at Southampton last summer following a coaching reshuffle, could reportedly emerge as a candidate for the role at St. Mary's. The 39-year-old is currently leading the team on an interim basis and is expected to remain in control for Saturday's trip to Chelsea.

Jones lasted 94 days as Southampton boss. The Saints suffered seven defeats in eight matches during that brief spell and are now four points adrift of safety at the bottom of the Premier League table.
