Sam Allardyce will leave West Bromwich Albion despite being asked to spearhead an instant promotion from the Championship next season.

The manager took over West Brom in December but was unable to prevent their relegation from the Premier League. His failure to do so ruined his record of never overseeing a top-flight demotion over his lengthy managerial career.

His last match at West Brom's helm will be against Leeds United on Sunday.

"West Bromwich Albion made me a generous offer to stay at The Hawthorns that shows the commitment of an ambitious club," Allardyce said in a statement. "After serious consideration I have decided not to accept that offer.

"If I were to stay and achieve promotion next season the expectation would be for me to continue for at least another season and, sadly, that is not a commitment I feel able to make at this stage of my career."

The 66-year-old urged the club to hire "a young and ambitious manager" as his replacement. West Brom have already started their search for his successor.

Allardyce managed Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United, Sunderland, Crystal Palace, and Everton in the Premier League before his stint at The Hawthorns. He was also in charge of England in 2016 before he was sacked after 67 days for being caught on camera expressing an interest in profiting from bypassing the Football Association's rules on third-party ownership.
