Manchester United are engaged in negotiations to sell Marouane Fellaini to an unknown club in China, according to Simon Stone of BBC Sport.

Fellaini, who is sidelined with a calf injury, signed a two-year contract extension until 2020 last summer. The club assured him that he was under no pressure to leave, but the team also said it would consider selling Fellaini if a "serious offer" was submitted, according to Jamie Jackson of The Guardian.

Belgian reporter Kristof Terreur reports that Shandong Luneng are the unknown club considered the front-runner to sign Fellaini, and they hope to complete a deal with United as soon as possible.

Even though the domestic transfer window closes on Thursday, Chinese teams have until next month to complete deals.

Fellaini was the centerpiece signing during David Moyes' first transfer window in charge of Manchester United in 2013. He struggled to win over supporters in his first couple of seasons before evolving into an important component in Jose Mourinho's first team.

However, opportunities have decreased under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskaer, who used Fellaini as a substitute in just two of the four matches before the midfielder injured his calf.
