Argentina's national team confirmed late Tuesday that first-choice shot-stopper Sergio Romero had suffered a right knee injury in training, ruling the Manchester United deputy out of contention for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Romero, 31, was one of 23 players named to Jorge Sampaoli's official World Cup squad on Monday, and with 94 La Albiceleste caps, which include a starring role at the 2014 contest in Brazil, the Racing academy product was in line to again feature in the starting XI in Russia.

The national team did not expand on its statement, though it's likely River Plate 'keeper Franco Armani will be handed first-choice duties, while Chelsea backup Willy Caballero could also figure into Sampaoli's plans. Tigres' Nahuel Guzman, who was named to the provisional squad, was called up to replace Romero on the roster.

Argentina kicks off its 12th consecutive World Cup on June 16 against Euro 2016 darling Iceland following a pair of tune-ups versus Haiti and Israel.
