Mourinho's longtime assistant Rui Faria to leave Manchester United
Manchester United's assistant manager Rui Faria, who has worked alongside boss Jose Mourinho for over 17 years at a number of European clubs, will leave the Red Devils at the end of the season.
Faria's name has popped up in some ongoing managerial searches, and Mourinho has even labelled his right-hand man as a good fit to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. But, Faria insists he intends to prioritise his family with his free time.
"I have had 17 years of incredible and unforgettable experiences," Faria said in a statement. "However, I have felt for some time that I would like to spend much more quality time with my family before pursuing any new challenge in my professional life.
"My heartfelt thanks go to the manager, Jose Mourinho, for the belief he had in me, all those years ago, when it all was just a student dream. I would like to thank him for the opportunity and confidence, for the knowledge and experience, but most importantly for his friendship."
Faria first joined forces with Mourinho at Portuguese minnow Uniao de Leiria, serving as the club's fitness coach before following Mourinho to Porto in 2002, where together they won the UEFA Cup, Champions League, two Primeira Liga titles, and one Portuguese Cup in just over two years. The 42-year-old Faria then always had a spot on Mourinho's technical staff everywhere they went, including Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, and United.
While Faria remained mum about his next destination, Mourinho reiterated his expectation to see him managing a top side in the future.
"17 years and the kid is now a man," Mourinho said of Faria's departure. "The intelligent student is now a football expert, ready for a successful career as a manager."
