Hazard won't consider new Chelsea deal until World Cup is over
Eden Hazard is prepared to wait until after Belgium finishes its World Cup campaign and he's enjoyed a summer holiday before considering fresh terms at Chelsea.
The Blues are reportedly poised to spurn offers worth around £200 million from a domestic rival such as Manchester City, but are apparently less confident of being able to resist the overtures of Real Madrid. The London club is understood to be readying a salary worth in excess of £300,000 to try and take his paperwork beyond the current agreement of 2020.
"Look, I'm going to finish the season first, then play the World Cup and then I'll leave on holiday," Hazard told the Guardian's Jacob Steinberg. "We'll see what happens next. I haven't thought about it yet; I have another two years' contract with Chelsea. I am very happy. I just think about the end of the season and the World Cup."
Another reason for Hazard's delay is that he wants to see if he is Real Madrid's primary summer target. There is also speculation that he is waiting to see who is hired at Chelsea should manager Antonio Conte leave at the end of the season.
Following a recent 1-0 defeat to Manchester City, Hazard reflected on a performance where "you leave the pitch (and) have the impression that you've ran, but that you haven't played a game of football." He was deployed as a false nine and touched the ball 32 times before he was substituted on 89 minutes. His clear unease increased rumours that his future lies away from Chelsea.
When questioned on his usage at Chelsea in Monday's press conference in anticipation of Belgium's friendly visit from Saudi Arabia, Hazard answered tactfully.
"I just want to be on the pitch," Hazard said. "No. 9 or No. 10. I can play left-back if the manager wants me to, no problem."
The 27-year-old began the 2017-18 campaign shaking off the effects of ankle surgery, but has contributed 14 goals and six assists across Premier League and Champions League play. He joined Chelsea from Lille in 2012 for around £32 million, and has since collected two league titles and winners medals in the League Cup and Europa League.
