Chile books semi-final berth despite drab stalemate against Australia

It wasn't pretty, but for Chile, it was enough.

Far from its best, twice-defending Copa America champ Chile is off to the Confederations Cup semi-final courtesy of Sunday's 1-1 draw with Australia in Moscow.

Half-time substitute Martin Rodriguez's first international goal was the difference as the Cruz Azul attacker's 67th-minute finish nullified James Troisi's opener to level the scoreline.

Australia needed to win by a two-goal margin, and after Troisi's first-half finish gave the Socceroos an unlikely lead, Ange Postecoglou and Co. will rue the opportunities missed.

Even after Rodriguez's goal seemingly sucked the wind from Australia's efforts, the islanders had their chances, with substitute striker Jamie MacLaren most notably fluffing a quality chance yards from goal.

Postecoglou may be left to second-guess his tactics and changes. Celtic stud Tom Rogic was an unused sub despite a good showing in Russia, while Tim Cahill's early second-half exit on his 100th cap was a bizarre decision considering his noticeable influence as a playmaking creator in support of Tomi Juric.

Chile won't care, and with Arturo Vidal arguably the tournament's outstanding player thus far, and Alexis Sanchez a constant threat in attack with Eduardo Vargas, La Roja will fancy their chances against Euro 2016 winner Portugal on Wednesday in Kazan.
