Premier League tickets are Europe's costliest
English fans of top-flight football are getting the worst deal among supporters in Europe, according to a metric that calculates fan value for money in Europe's top football leagues.
The GoEuro Football Price Index, which calculates results using average ticket prices combined with league ranking, has slotted the Premier League fourth behind the top-tier leagues in Germany, Spain, and Portugal.
The index determines the median Premier League ticket price is £54, according to Lisa Bachelor of the Guardian.
An algorithm used by UEFA and FIFA places England third in a worldwide league ranking, one spot above where they sit in the fan's value index.
The Portuguese top flight sits third in the GoEuro index with an average ticket price of £23 - less than half of the Premier League's median ticket value.
The GoEuro index also determines the cost of an away game. The Premier League represents the costliest trip at £54, narrowly edging the Spanish and Italian leagues.
The average cost of a Premier League away trip is £216, an astronomical figure compared to the Portuguese Primeira Liga, which has a median cost of £98.
"It costs almost the same to travel to Germany to see a Bundesliga match as it does to stay in the UK and attend a Premier League game," said Naren Shaam, CEO of GoEuro. "These numbers might lead you to question whether home fans in the UK are really getting a fair deal for their money."
Some Premier League clubs have made an effort to curb ticket prices. In July, Swansea City announced a cap on away tickets of £22 (£10 for children), saving supporters nearly £300,000.
In addition to away subsidies from clubs like Swansea, several other top-flight clubs have frozen ticket prices as a reaction to dissent from supporters across the UK.

Manchester United capped ticket prices for the fourth consecutive season. Arsenal, the Premier League's priciest season seat - ranging from £1,014-2,013 - announced it would freeze the price of non-season tickets for the sixth time in 10 years.
Even with these efforts from England's top-flight sides, supporters of Premier League sides are still paying significantly more than supporters of other leagues.
