Report: Argos sale to be announced as early as Wednesday; club to move to BMO Field in 2016
The Toronto Argonauts are set to begin a new chapter in their storied history.
The sale of the club will be announced as early as Wednesday, reports TSN's Dave Naylor, which means the Argos will likely be playing at Toronto's BMO Field in 2016.
The new Argo ownership will be a partnership between Bell and Toronto businessman Larry Tanenbaum, two of the three partners in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. ...
Bell is the majority owner of TSN, the exclusive television rights holder of the CFL. The deal includes the Argos hosting two Grey Cup games, including the 2016 CFL championship game.
It's unknown whether the 2016 Grey Cup game will be played at Rogers Centre, where the Argos currently play, or at BMO Field, home to Major League Soccer's Toronto FC.
The Argos will host a press conference at 1:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday at BMO Field, the club announced.
The move will pave the way for real grass to be installed at the Rogers Centre, something Major League Baseball's Toronto Blue Jays have long been awaiting.
And the Argos are hoping the move will help renew interest in the club, which averaged only 17,790 fans a game in 2014, far below capacity at their home stadium.
