RedBlacks select center Alex Mateas 1st overall in 2015 CFL Draft
With the first overall selection in the 2015 CFL Draft, the Ottawa RedBlacks selected Alex Mateas, a center out of the University of Connecticut.
Just moments after being drafted, Mateas signed a three-year contract with the RedBlacks, general manager Marcel Desjardins announced.
"I look forward to contributing any way possible to the team and to bring a Grey Cup back to Ottawa," Mateas said after he was selected.
An Ottawa native, Mateas began his collegiate career at Penn State in 2010, but transferred to UConn after redshirting his first season. He played in 32 games at UConn, starting 28 in his three-year career with the Huskies, including 24 starts at center. He can play both center and guard.
The 6-foot-4, 309 pound offensive lineman recently attended the New York Jets rookie minicamp and was invited to the New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp. He's considered one of the most pro-ready prospects in this year's draft class.
